Gender Identities beyond the Binary Tradition

Abstract

I focus on the sensitive issue of gender identities, argueing that those wanting to transition to the opposite gender to that assigned to them at birth and those refusing to conform to the binary tradition whereby the only alternatives are to be either male or female, make an attempt to challenge conventions and cultural stereotypes, but often at the cost of considerable confusion, emotional distress and social isolation.
