Abstract

In this article I explore the possibilities of a Winnicottian approach to understanding film with particular reference to his concept of the facilitating environment. It is intended to complement existing conversations about the moving image that are derived from a predominantly Lacanian perspective. The paper should be of interest to readers looking for an understanding of the relationship between film and the spectator that privileges the idea of the subject as an active maker of meaning.
